Skills and Experience

From looking through my CV you can see I have a wide and in-depth experience when using IT and computers, competency ranging from: setting up and maintaining home networks connected to the Internet; building levels for the games Quake3 and Counter-Strike; photo retouching and graphic design; and creating dynamic and database driven web sites. Please see below my summary skills-matrix.

Whilst at university my higher marks were between 60 and 80%; for example, the following areas:

Digital Computer Systems - Including, binary arithmetic, assembly language programming and processor architecture;

Requirements Analysis - In this coursework the lecturer played the role of the client and we in small groups were design teams, creating a realistic simulation of a system design project where success depends on a professional proactive approach;

Object Orientated Analysis and Design - Part group coursework and part individual coursework;

Programming Languages; Team Projects; Networks and Distributed Technology; Advanced Human-Computer Interaction; and Advanced Human-Computer Interface Technologies.

My proficiency in these subjects shows that I have both a logical and pragmatic approach to working, while at the same time involving innovative and intuitive ideas in everything I do. Furthermore, I am easily able to adapt well in both team and individual situations.

Since doing my GCSE’s I have noticed that the subjects chosen tend to involve design in one way or another. I believe this can be contributed to the fact I enjoy producing something that aids in making peoples’ lives easier; while at the same time works to my strengths in problem solving.

I consider myself a competent designer and have practised my design skills and knowledge during my education on domestic products and computer systems; I have also experienced graphic design when producing web sites and promotional media.

Since leaving university I’ve been involved in problems more practical in nature working with my parents in their smallholding, while also using the Web to continue training myself in the technologies and practices involved in developing web sites.

Programming Skills Matrix

Programming Languages Used for Last used Comments
HTML, CSS and JavaScript 5 years March 2008 I like pushing these to their limits, but try not to use hacks or work-a-rounds. Advanced use of these can greatly help usability, functionality and even aesthetics of all web pages.
XHTML and HTML4 4 years March 2008 I like well-formed code, and discovered advanced issues on accessibility, standards and cross-browser compatibility, which also relate to CSS and JavaScript.
Basic, DOS Batch 2 years 1999 My first taste of programming, and I used it to make the family computer easier to use for my parents.
PHP and MySQL 6 months March 2008 Even static Web sites benefit from PHP.
C, Java, wxClips and Prolog 4 months March 2002 Prolog is a Logic Based programming language, and wxClips is Knowledge Based. Both were interesting to use (and are very powerful, but only for select applications).
Pascal, Logo, VisualBasic 4 months 2001 Simple programming concepts in A-Levels.
XML and XSLT 1 months Sept 2003 Interested in Schema and SOAP, also need more training in XSLT.

Work Experience

  • I’m currently working with my parents in their 16 acre smallholding, building a house, converting a building to a design workshop and studio, developing the grounds, looking after the animals, writing a business plan, producing items to sell, and showing the alpacas to interested people. At the same time I’ve been developing web sites and exploring digital art and photography.

  • Summer 2001 I worked full time maintaining gardens and landscapes with the team from Elmy Landscapes.

  • During University terms 2000-2001 and 2002-2003 I worked on a bar at university, in the high-pressure, lively night-time environment of the biggest student’s union building in the UK.

  • In High School (1997) we found ourselves work experience placements for the two-week scheme. I spent these two weeks at BT Labs in Martlesham. I was part of a small team experimenting with communicating via computers to collaborate in the design and construction of a small website.

Personality

I believe I am a likeable and approachable person who is confident in dealing with people at all levels, I am of smart appearance, intelligent and honest.

Through work and education I have gained confidence in working as part of a team and showing initiative as an individual.

My years as part of the Scouting movement have given me valuable skills in teamwork, organisation, and communication, and I also completed related training in leadership.

At University I found I like getting involved in other activities such as planning and attending social events, and helping the student charity organisation in fundraising events.

Interests and Activities

I enjoy sports in general and like to keep fit, and have previously been in clubs for gymnastics, squash and roller-skating, and I was part of the hall badminton team at university. I also enjoy hiking, camping, and hill walking.

I enjoy creating art on the computer and playing computer games over the Internet. I like to write programs and web pages, progressively more complex ones intended to broaden my experience.
